The artists showing in the apocalypse show are not just local or national… they’re universal and here to let you know that the Gregorian Calendar’s translation of the Mayan Calendar is 11 months off. Come join the commemoration January 21^st 2012, at 6PM – 11:30PM.

In 2012, the detroit contemporary will act as a place for artists to seek refuge and conduct their own form of arbitrary confinement. Starting with the apocalypse show (as if the apocalypse started here) spectators will arrive expecting to enter into the end of the World then leave feeling like the World just ended… and that is now the beginning.

This new direction of the detroit contemporary will advance the foundation that lies between farm as culture and art as culture. Stay tuned-in to future exhibitions and see how it all happens.

As an artist in residence for Expodium, the Netherlands, Friso Wiersum has been in Detroit since the end of October. As you can read at the blog www.newstrategiesdmc.blogspot.com he looks in amazement at the attention this town devotes to itself. Not an object producing artist himself he proposes a series of films. Not touching on Detroit directly, the themes in the movies touch upon developments within the city we love. Friso will introduce the movies and themes, and invites you for an evening of food & film, thoughts & talks. Theme sequence: utopia, social welfare, revolt and nostalgia. Academics
Friso Wiersum graduated at University Utrecht in 2001. During his studies Contemporary History he also took courses in journalism, Russian and philosophy. The studies included an Erasmus programme at the Rheinische Wilhelm Friedrich Universität Bonn, Germany and a Socrates research semester at Université Michel de Montaigne Bordeaux IV, France. Following his studies he was invited to a historical research in the Bibliothéque National in Paris. From 2001 to 2003 he was an editor of Skript - historical magazine, Amsterdam.

Working career
Friso started his job life at GroenLinks as project assistant International Office. He continued working at Tumult - heading the portfolios ‘Politics’, ‘Architecture & City Planning’. During these years, 2004 – 2010, Friso free lanced in various assignments: from cultural programming the Globalisation festival or producing a series of community events for Partizan Publik to organizing public lectures in the ‘Failed States’ series. From May 2009 onwards Friso is project leader ‘Arts in Conflict’ at the Treaty of Utrecht 2013.

Moderator
Friso Wiersum moderated and hosted debates, presentations and events on cultural policies, international politics, and city planning for amongst others: Balkan Buro, Casco, Eastern Neighbours Film Festival, Expodium, Festival aan de Werf, HKU, Movies that Matter film festival, Netherlands Architecture Institute [Publishers], Prince Claus Funds and Rhizomatic.

Side Facts
Ever since high school Friso was involved in European exchange projects, often focusing on South Eastern Europe. He published some articles. He is a fanatic baseball player. And by the name of dubcovsky he is a dj in Kako Da Ne collective.

Siri Hermansen October 2011 Resident Artist

Siri Hermansen (b. 1969) is a video, photographer and Installation artist, based in Oslo. Recently she has focused her artistic practice on the aftereffects of abrupt social, economical or political changes in society. Chernobyl, the Ai Weiwei village; Caochangdi in Beijing and Pyramiden; a deserted Russian coalmine city in the arctic desert of the Spitsbergen are some of the sites she has explored artistically. Her artistic method resembles a form of shared anthropology where the outcome of the material is unpredictable and is dependent on the interrelations created on location, and the artists personal experience of the place.

She also questions how we deal with the fact that everybody sees and hears from a different perspective, and how this influences the way we comprehend reality. Siri Hermansen has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, The Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Today Artmuseum, Beijing, Moscow Museum of Photography and Tsedeka in Moscow.

Siri Hermansen is curently a research fellow at the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo.

Camila Botero's most recent work focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment – affected by circumstances imposed on us by this critical moment in time. Her specific interests are high-impact issues such as ecological effects, geopolitics, and territorial affairs. She uses different techniques and materials to explore the multiple perspectives and experiences of what it means to be human in our accelerated, digital age.

Her multidisciplinary work raises questions about the mutability of nature and reality, of genetics and science, and how technology is rapidly and irreversibly changing the world and changing its people.

Chris Meighan (1979) is primarily concerned with the personal relationship which individual people have with society. History is a particularly important element as well as the development of societies from their past dynamic and undeveloped state into the static, superficially free and open society of today. He works with live performance and video.

Jonas Ohlsson

Jonas Ohlsson's artwork combines elements from a chaotic collection of cultural, popular and personal references, using drawing, sculpture, installation, text and music (often within the same show) to create symphonies with multi-layered meanings. His background as an Electro musician seeps into his artistic process as, like a DJ, Olhsson uses the instinctual qualities of free-association and a working knowledge of the public to spin his messages and mediums together into visual rhythms that leave the viewer hot and sweaty and begging for more.

"The work develops itself; I can’t plan it. I can have a basic idea of where I want a drawing to go, but it’s like a football game: you can plan all you want, but when the game is on things happens by themselves."

Pregnancy is a leading cause of teenage dropouts in the United States. For over twenty years, The Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit, Michigan has acted as an educational and community center for pregnant and parenting teen mothers, and their children in the Detroit area. Catherine Ferguson Academy will be one of 18 schools to close or become a charter unless we speak up and show up in numbers. CFA provides services like WIC, healthcare, and early education from birth through pre-K. Without this support, most high school aged mothers do not graduate. In addition to being a successful school, CFA is an anchor to the community of young mothers.

" These girls are working too hard to get their education, they shouldn't have to worry about their school closing. Future generations depend on the success of these women."

Catherine Ferguson was a freed slave who founded a "Sabbath School" where freed black slaves and other working poor learned to read and write, cared for orphaned children, and provided childcare allowing women to work again. She was described to have responded to "the needs of the poor in an era which the poor were notably neglected".

Even though the cold has frozen our shows, we are still hard at work.

The Yes Farm is currently part of a fund raising event organized by the LoveLand Project. This project sells one square-inch portions of a vacant Detroit lot for $1. The square inches will function as visitable park and garden spaces spread around the city and mirrored online.

By clicking the link below, you can buy inches of Detroit that will directly help fund the Yes Farm. These funds will help us renovate a 100 year-old building, make health and safety improvements to the electrical system, include a bathroom facility and abate lead paint in order to provide a safer environment for our patrons, community members and kids.

Starting at 7:30pm, Nikos Doulos (Greece) and Joao Evangelista (Portugal) will be hosting a dinner that will evolve around their practices during their last four-week residency in Detroit. Their two-month visit will work as a pilot for a long-term residency program in Detroit.

They are the first two artists of a residency program initiated by Expodium Platform Voor Jonge Kunst (Utrecht, The Netherlands), 555 Gallery and The Yes Farm.

555 hosts this event as its fifth of a series of fundraisers and memberships drives to support its move to Southwest Detroit. Tickets for this event are $15 per person or $5 after 10pm. All proceeds benefit 555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios in its endeavor to provide programming at its new location in Southwest Detroit. The purchase of each ticket will also entitle patrons to 555 membership.

Expodium Platform For Young Art is an art space situated in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Having faith in the autonomous practice of the artist, Expodium initiates one year trajectories related to current phenomena in and outside the urban setting, and provokes participating artists to intervene within the city, stressing the importance of art practices in relation to a social context.

These fundraisers are just one way in which 555 is inviting community to come and share in expanding arts programming in Southwest Detroit. Some of the exciting programming includes the hosting of local, national, and international residency artists; public arts training for unemployed/underemployed adults; public arts training and engagement for Southwest Detroit youth; green arts and design workshops; and exhibitions featuring artists from around the US and beyond. In partnership with Southwest Housing Solutions, 555 will move into the former 3rd police precinct following renovations in 2010.

Since 2004, the mission of 555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios has been to enrich and diversify cultural life in the greater Metro-Detroit area. In support of this mission, 555 facilitates the development of emerging artists. We offer exhibition and installation space; host and support local, national, and international Residency Artists; lead and collaborate in the development of programs for the visual and performing arts; and provide workspace for practicing Local artists.

Biba has been practicing yoga for going on 18 years, teaching for 8 years, and has recently moved to Hamtramck. MI. She is also a dance artist and performer and considers this work beneficial in investigating heightened states of awareness and receptivity.

Just this week I was asked to open up The Yes Farm to visiting arts activists. They have created an incredible workshop in the main gallery space to make hundreds of signs, screen printed banners, gigantic
puppets and extra large sunflowers with plastered political
statements on sticks. All of which will be paraded by participants of the marches that will be taking place during the USSF.

Please come on down, the farm will be open from 1pm-8pm Friday June 18 (tomorrow) to June 21st (Monday). They are welcoming any and all participation; so if you'd like to make yourself a sign, help with larger ones, or just surround yourself with incredible progressive artistic energy come on by! Detroit’s waste incinerator is the largest incinerator in the world, operated by the world’s largest incinerator company – Covanta.
Burning garbage is one of the primary sources of cancer-causing dioxins in the world
Burning garbage for energy produces more climate pollution per unit of electricity than coal power plants.
Over 90% of waste burned can be recycled or composted, generating more than 10 times the number of jobs than burning or burying these valuable resources.
If all the waste buried or burned in the U.S. were to be recycled and composted, hundreds of thousands of long-term jobs could be created while reducing a massive toxic burden for some of the poorest communities in this country.

Detroit Mayor David Bing can choose to embrace Zero Waste Detroit’s plan for green jobs – expanding curbside recycling throughout the city and ending incineration of Detroit’s trash.

You can help Mayor Bing make this decision by joining thousands of community activists, environmental groups and labor unions in demanding climate, community and labor justice!

Saturday, May 8th, The Yes Farm will be hosting/presenting The East Side Stills - Portraits of East Side Detroiters, 20 Years Apart. The show will run from 4 to 10PM, with work from Bruce Harkness, Garrett MacLean, Monica Breen and Bob Denys. In addition to prints shown on the walls, there will be a slide show of Bob's work. An audio recording of Rev. Laster from the late 80's (the former owner of the space now occupied by The Yes Farm and one of the people photographed by Bruce for his project) will be played in the main room.

Buena Vista Nights will be a series of fundraisers to help renovate one of our new locations at the Police 3rd Precinct in Southwest Detroit. May 1st 2010 - The first Buena Vista Night will take place at the former Buoy 3 Building at 3041 W. Vernor Highway in Southwest Detroit. Enjoy a romantic spring evening of visual arts featuring works from local and national artists, light food and refreshments, dancing, and live music by Sylvia Inwood and the Woodtones and special musical guests from the Cupcake DJ Collective. Come dance on the outdoor patio under cantina lights in view of the Ambassador Bridge. $20 per person or $30 per couple.

* Yes Farmer Kt Andresky is currently exhibiting her glass work at the Janice Charach Gallery in West Bloomfield. 'State of the Glass' is an all glass show. Please stop by to see her current body of work that examines the boundaries between the female form and the sea. The show closes May 12th.

* We are currently accepting an open call for proposals. Have an idea to make a scene within this space? Write it out and send it to us, we’re looking to fill the next year with great artistic feats!

* Clarification of Monday Night Arts: It is rarely on Monday nights. This is a time to create and make art of your choice. A stage is open for poets musicians and dancers, music is always playing weather live or prerecorded. Very low key, BYOB style. Check the Yes Farm Blog site for Monday Night Art times and locations.

News From the Neighborhood:
The Catherine Ferguson Academy is on the list of schools to close down. There will be a protest this Monday at the Martin Luther King Highschool to stop the closing of many needed schools including our loved Catherine Ferguson Academy, a school (and farm) for pregnant teenagers and teen moms. Pleaase come show your support, the meeting starts at 5pm and some protest signs will be provided.

I have twice traveled to Haiti to photograph health care issues in the central plateau. I have met amazing people and organizations, donating their time to give free health care to those in need. The scale of demand has now grown exponentially, as has the need for funds.

Farewell To The Cupcake Girls & (Ben)

For the last three months The Cupcake Girls have been doing a residency with the 555 where they made concrete cakes and displayed them in abandoned storefronts along Chene Street. What started as a project that we were somewhat skeptical about, has been a powerful experience that has taught us a lot about making public art pieces in Detroit.

The concrete cakes and cupcakes that were topped with tinted joint-compound frosting first went into an old drycleaners shop across from a Post Office. From the start it affected many people. Folks on the street wanted to know what was going on, they helped set-up the displays on old pieces of wood and upside-down drawers. People got into the project from the start. Some of the cakes disappeared, and then were brought back. People began monitoring the display, straightening-up the cakes that got knocked over, telling people not to take them. As the artists came and went bringing new cakes and sometimes taking some for another window, they began to meet people in the neighborhood. When they would drive-up people would say “Hey it’s The Cupcake Girls. What kind of cakes do you have today?” Cupcakes started turning up at places all over town. Old ladies were pulling up in their cars and loading them in their trunks saying they were the cutest things they had ever seen. The community got involved. People got interested.

There were hard parts too. A lot of the cakes got smashed. In the old Polish bakery on Chene and Palmer the window was ransacked almost immediately. Were they mad the cakes were made out of concrete? Were they pissed off that artists had the time and resources to make concrete cakes when people along Chene Street have so little? Did it just look like too much fun not to smash a cake on the way home from school? It was difficult for the artists. It’s always hard when you spend time making something and then someone destroys it. One thing was for sure it was definitely getting attention, and causing a strong reaction.

The turning point happened in the beginning of November. The project was almost over and all the remaining cakes had been rounded-up and brought back to the 555 for the closing show. We heard sirens and then someone said a building on Chene and Palmer was on fire. Everyone immediately started walking in that direction. When they got there the unbelievable was happening. The Bakery was on fire. Someone had torched the Bakery. Was it a coincidence or a message- stay the fuck away? Who knows. Who could tell what was happening it was all just too strange. The Girls felt awful, they thought their project had caused the building to burn. Maybe it had. Our friends from the Fire Department tried to soften the blow. “It’s not your fault,” the captain told them. It wasn’t much consolation.

Last weekend, with the 555 show over and the Cupcake Girls time in Detroit coming to an end we went back to the Bakery. We brought the beat-up cakes that remained and installed them in the burned-out storefront. Everyone knew it had to be done. You can’t burn us out, were the artists, were resilient, were fighters. With all the cakes in the window the installation was complete Jane said, “It looks good.” Krysta gave here a sideways glance. There was broken glass everywhere. The entire building was charred and a smokey smell hung in the art. She thought about it a little more, “That’s fuck-up I said that.” “It looks like shit.” I told her. “But the cakes look great.”

Thanks again to the Cupcake Girls (& Ben) for inspiring us with their decication to their work, their resilience, and their ambition. Detroit was both gracious and harsh to them- as it is to most of us. It proved again to be a place where the unbelievable happens. Were there are really high highs and really low lows. Living in the D the city always has something to teach you. They will be missed. But they will be back.

Thanks to all who attended and participated in the Altered Clothing Show, it has been great to see people sporting their new threads around town. Apparently some folks thought it was really a good idea because we have had requests to do it again. We are even entertaining the idea of making it a monthly of bi-monthly event- continuing with the format of a clothes sale paired with a music performance. Stay tuned for more on that.

Friday November 13^th7-10 PM

The idea for this show is to recycle unwanted clothing, and to create unique handmade fashions. It will feature clothing that has been transformed into wearable art. Artists from Detroit and across the country will be hanging-up clothing that has been altered in some way. The main clothing item will be t-shirts, but we will be accepting jackets, pants, hoodies etc. The clothes will be decorated with silkscreens, spray painted stencils, embroidery, drawings- or whatever else people dream up. There is room for interpretation. The clothing will be exhibited one night only, November 13^th from 7-10. At the opening people will be able to try things on, and buy them on the spot.

We are excited to have this event. As everyone is on a tight budget these days, we see this as an opportunity to find an inexpensive way for people to get new clothes they are excited about. As fashion is an important part of self-expression, this is also an opportunity for people to create their own styles and empower themselves by having their voices represented. There will be a Fashion Show and live music by Diana Nuncera. Hope to see you there.

This sunday at the yes farm there will be a concert. Two bands. One is from clinton michigan, they are called WIGWAM. The members are Tom Hohmann and Barbara Schauwecker. They have been working hard in other music projects for many years. Tom's band for this whole last decade "THE USA IS A MONSTER" is seriously one of the true powerhouses in the history of d.i.y. underground rock music. They played a million shows all over the u.s. and europe and inspired many. It is hard to explain how awesome they were. Tom's 7-piece mystical prog side project "Black Elf Speaks" recently ripped a hole in the space-time continuum in detroit and other locales. Barbara's band for many years based out of brooklyn is "ANIMENTAL", which took many forms and included various casts of characters. An epic performance-art "happening" type of project, ANIMENTAL involved intense costumery and set creation, many different experiments with various musical styles from stoner metal to ambient electronic soundscapes to honky rap... WIGWAM is the new twopiece manifested by these characters. They just moved to Michigan and i believe that this sunday is the first WIGWAM performance.

THE TWOPRONG MODERN POWER TRIO is a new band from the east, on tour all month long. We play long-form progressive compositions that fluctuate between tightly orchestrated themes and completely free-improvised jams. Many moods and atmospheres are created. This blurb is being written by a person from this band, so I don't really know what to say. We are getting better each night and we really seem to stun people who pay attention. The people in the band are Eli Winograd, who has been recording psychedelic pop records under the monicker "twoprong" for ten years, drummer Will Berney from an amazing heavy free-improv band "horsespirit penetrates" from northampton MA, and bassist Scott Rideout from "genesis climber", a great prog-metal band from oakland...

I hope you have the time to stop by the yes farm sunday night. We work very hard to create this music and take it on the road, and the space there is so great, it really is going to be amazing, especially if the room is full of humans...

Call for artists to show their work at our show. In celebration of spring it is a seed theme- seeds of change, seeds of knowledge, seeds you plant- there is room for interpretation. There will be two musical performances as well.

The show is a benefit to raise funds for establishing a permanent electrical system in the building. We are asking for a $5-$20 suggested donation at the door, and artists may choose to donate a portion of their sales to our cause if they choose. However we will not turn anyone away for lack of funds, and we do not take commission.

December 19th 2008 marked the 1st ever show for The Yes Farm which was a great success. There were 20 participating artists, a dance performance and the Unsilent Night sound piece. Thanks to all for participating and helping with the show. We could not have done it without all the support from the community. Thanks to the Weertz family for giving us the opportunity to utilize this exciting space. And thanks to Motor City Brewing for the ice cold beer.

Stay tuned for more art shows and activities. Ideas for future shows include a farming themed show in the spring. Work day scheduled for this Sunday January 25th to pull nails from freshly salvaged wood- bring your crowbar.

Unsilent Night

On the night of our first show, amid a chorus of bells and chimes generated from multiple boom boxes, we walked through knee high snow around the neighborhood as part of Unsilent Night. It was a beautiful night for a walk, and fun to make snow angels on the stairs of the church. Thanks to Garrett for organizing this event and to the creators of the Unsilent Night concept and music.

We are proud to present the 2nd Annual Detroit UnSilent Night. The event will take place in our neighborhood on Dec 19th, departing from the corner of Farnsworth and Moran at 6:30PM sharp. Tapes and cds will be handed out starting at 6PM. Bring a boombox with working cassette or cd player(or cd player with speakers), batteries!, warm clothes, and the ability to walk for 42 minutes. The walk will end inside The Yes Farm, with our first Detroit art show to begin (7:30-???).

Corner Dreaming: Our New Home

The corner of Farnsworth and Moran, our dear and Near East Side of Detroit new headquarters. These are the renditions of what the space will look like once we're done working on it, a good 1-2 years down the line. So we've started working on the space and hope to have a show in it as it currently is, to give people a chance to see "the before."

No heat, no electricity, yes to water, but no to plumbing. Windows? not so much. But it has potential. And we like potential.
This is what it looks like right now, with a long way to go.

The Yes Farm At The Peoples Art Festival

This weekend our artist collective The Yes Farm was on the scene at The Peoples Art Festival. Garrett and I set up a scaffold, brought out some hay and had a nice day talking to folks and spinning records. Garrett typed cryptic messages on his typewriter, and I made roses out of coat hangers and blue painters tape. We hung our collages in a little gallery space and sold some T-shirts with images of Paul Bunion cutting down the incinerator . Some people came by and didn't quite know what to make of us because we weren't really trying to sell anything. Other people got that it was more of a performance, that we were just there to show what we do, talk to people, represent our organization, make people think. A good time was had and we made some good contacts. The Yes Farm is now officially out there in the public. Hello Detroit.

This is the first post for The Yes Farm artist collective.

We are a group committed to living and creating in Detroit. We believe the arts play an important role in the community and we seek to bring art into the lives of the people and places around us.

Our goal is to establish a permanent location for artists to live and work. In this location we would like to host workshops and events, and have space for visiting artists to create in. We also hold a deep commitment to ecology and would like to grow food, and crate artistic open spaces in our neighborhood.

It is our hope contribute something positive to our community through art.
